Gabriel Gyurjyan ( 1892-1987 )



He was born in Turkey in 1892. It was in 1928 when he became a lecturer at the Fine Arts Faculty in Yerevan, and in 1947 when he became a professor at the Institute of Fine Art in Yerevan. He was an author of a few articles and books. In the period from 1951 to 1959 and 1968 to 1969 he was a chairman of Artist’s Union of Armenia.

Stepanos Nersisyan (1815-1884)


Stepanos Nersisyan was an Armenian painter who was known as the "Founder of the painting genre" and a famous portrait painter in the Armenian art history. Stepanos Nersisyan was born in Yerevan. He began his education in Tblisi. He graduated at the St. Petersburg Academy of Fine Arts in the middle of the 19th century.

He created the well-known series of portraits of his contemporaries, well-known figures of Armenian History like the founders of the Armenian alphabet Mesrop Mashtots, Sahak Partev. He also painted many Landscape paintings.

Sarkis Muradyan ( 1927-2007 )






Sarkis Muradyan was born in Yerevan in 1927. He lived in Yerevan. He was an honoured Art Worker of the Armenia SSR, a winner of the State Prize of the USSR and a painter of genre scenes, portraits, landscapes.

Egishe Tadevosyan (1870-1936)

Yegishe Tatevosyan was an Armenian painter, whose enormous legacy still influences Armenian artists. He was born in Armenia (1870), then went to Moscow to begin his education. He finished at the gymnasium at the Lazarev Institute, then at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture, graduating in 1894.

 He lived in Moscow until 1901, then he moved to Tblisi where he continued painting.At the beginning of his career he was influenced by Vardges Sureinants. However in 1900 he started using Pointillism and expressionism in his paintings.

Panos Terlemezian (1867-1941)

Panos Terlemezian was a former fighter and painter, who was born in 1865. He graduated from the local school in Van, where he later taught art, then joined the revolutionary movement against the absolutist regime and was inprisoned. He escaped from prison in 1890s and fled to Tblisi. In 1895 he went to St. Petersburg, Russia and enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts.Panos Terlemezian played an important part after 1917 in establishing Soviet Armenian school of painting and founding the first art institute in the Soviet Armenia.

Alexander Bazhbeuk-Melikyan (1891-1966)

 Alexander Bazhbeuk-Melikyan was one of the greatest Armenian Soviet painters and Honored Artist of the Georgian SSR (1961) who lived all his life in Tbilisi.Bazhbeuk-Melikyan's great subject was nude women . Many of his paintings present nude women; others depict exotically dressed women in the role of juggler, acrobat or magician.
